BROTHERS OF THE HOLY FAMILY

Brother Gabriel Taborin is the Founder of the INSTITUE OF THE BROTHERS OF THE HOLY FAMILY. He was born in Belleydoux, France on November 1, 1799. He began his work in the diocese of Belley and obtained its approval from Pope Gregory XVI in 1841. His holy life endedin Belley on November 24, 1864. The cause of his beautification has been introduced in Rome and in 1991 he was proclaimed "venerable" by Pope John Paul II.
Sustained by a deep faith, he began at a very early age to work as catechist and teacher in his own village, and in the neighboring diocese, to foster the flourishment of the faith, thus participating in the Christian rebirth of France. It was a need of the times. The Church of France had suffered religious persecution and the population had suffered social disorders as a consequence of the political revolution of 1789.
Brother Gabriel spent himself above all in the small rural centers supporting elementary schools, educating adults, and animating the liturgy in parishes.
He was greatly attraceted to consecrated religious life. This led him to be himself; a religious together with some young men who joined him in this way which he considered more suitable for reaching the salvation promised by the Gospel and an ideal instrument for the apostolate among the youth. He, as a layman, founded an institute of brothers to be leaven of faith in rural areas and schools.
In his noble undertaking, he didn't feel alone because the Providence of God pud on his path wise and friendly persons. Among them Mons. Raymond Devie, Bishop of Belley, who was an inspired guide and help, and the holy Cure of Ars who helped him to continue the work God entrusted to him.
During his life, the Institute spread in France and in Savoy. He sent brothers to the United States but the foundation was not successful. Open to perform "any good work", he loved to get involved in mission territory. He would say: "I would rather prefer to be a catechist in the missions than attaining any title of human prestige.
As a devoted son of the Church, he would like to become brother of all. His most laborious life was spent in constant and full service of his brothers.
His legacy is the Lay Institute of the BROTHERS OF THE HOLY FAMILY, whose purpose is the service of the youth in local churches. The Brothers following the example of their Founder Brother Gabriel, engage themselves in directing schools and youth movements.
At present, the BROTHERS OF THE HOLY FAMILY direct educational institutions and establishments in 14 Countries of the World: Italy, France, Spain, Ivory Coast, Benin, Colombia, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Burkina Faso, Uruguay, India and Philippines. As fas as possible, they are available wherever needs arise, and are open to all people.
The members of the Institute make simple vows of Chastity, Poverty and Obedience - temporary first, and after at least five years, perpetual.
Their spirituality stems from the contemplation of the mystery of Jesus' hidden life in Nazareth with Mary and Joseph. They cherish the example of family union. They have their motto: "In prayer, work and love, you'll find peace." From the Holy Family, they learn humility and simplicity. They consider themselves equal in rights and in duties; and the only distinction lies in the different tasks assigned to them by their superiors.
The Institute, due to legal purposes, is organized in Provinces and Communities under the leadership of a Provincial Superior and a Local Superior who assist the Superior General in his leadership therein expressing unity within the Institute.
After the Vatican II, the Institute proceeded to the revision of the Constitutions which were approved by the Holy See on May 1, 1986. This authoritative endorsement gives the Brothers a new impetus to pursue with confidence the ideals of religious life and apostolate they received from their founder, Brother Gabriel Taborin.
